CAA and Morris are generally pursuing similar approaches. For retainers and sometimes stock, they help fledgling Web 2.0 companies negotiate deals with the kind of folks on the Hollywood IT list (these Big Media execs are responsible for profitably adapting the content their entertainment companies produce for the Internet, without cannibalizing traditional revenue streams.) To do a good job, William Morris and CAA have had to act much like Silicon Valley venture capitalists, sorting through thousands of companies and trying to back the best. Our early impression is that both agencies competently fulfilled this task, and are knowledgeable about the kind of companies profiled on our annual OnHollywood 100 list of top private digital entertainment companies.
